Review

In the world of independent movies, it can sometimes be a challenge to find a film that truly captures your attention and keeps you on the edge of your seat. However, in the case of Falcon Lake, director Sara Seligman has crafted a truly engaging and thought-provoking thriller that is sure to stick with you long after the credits roll.

The film follows the story of a young Mexican couple, Lorena and her husband Gabino, who are attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border in search of a better life. However, when their journey leads them to Falcon Lake, they quickly find themselves caught up in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a group of American vigilantes who patrol the area looking for illegal immigrants.

As the tension builds and the stakes get higher, both Lorena and Gabino must confront their own fears and past traumas in order to survive. Along the way, they also encounter a variety of other characters who are similarly affected by the harsh realities of life on both sides of the border.

One aspect that makes Falcon Lake particularly compelling is its exploration of some very timely themes. With issues such as immigration and border control continuing to dominate headlines around the world, Seligman’s film offers a nuanced look at these complex topics from multiple perspectives.

At its core though, Falcon Lake is ultimately about people. From Lorena and Gabino’s struggle for survival to the various supporting characters they meet along the way, each person in this film is depicted with depth and humanity. This is thanks in no small part to Seligman’s deft direction as well as some truly standout performances from the cast.

In particular, actress Stephanie Arcila shines as Lorena. Her portrayal perfectly captures both the strength and vulnerability that defines her character’s journey throughout the film. Meanwhile, Michael Stahl-David delivers an equally powerful performance as Mark, one of the American vigilantes who becomes increasingly conflicted about his role in the events unfolding around him.

Of course, a great film is only as good as its execution, and Falcon Lake certainly does not disappoint in this regard either. The cinematography is stunning, with sweeping shots of the Texas landscape capturing both its beauty and its isolation. Meanwhile, the score from composer Stephen Trask adds an extra layer of tension to the proceedings.

It’s also worth noting that Falcon Lake has already received plenty of critical acclaim. The film premiered at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in 2019, where it was praised for its “genuine empathy” and “thrillingly tense” atmosphere.

Despite all this praise though, it’s fair to say that Falcon Lake has somewhat flown under the radar when it comes to wider public awareness. This is a shame, as it’s undoubtedly one of the most impressive indie movies of recent years.

Part of this may be due to the fact that some viewers might find aspects of the film confronting or difficult to watch. Seligman doesn’t shy away from showing some of the harsh realities faced by immigrants trying to cross into America. However, she does so with sensitivity and understanding, never resorting to exploitative or gratuitous imagery.

Ultimately though, Falcon Lake is a film that deserves to be seen and appreciated by a wider audience. It’s a powerful story about human resilience in the face of adversity, told with skill and grace by a talented director and cast. If you’re looking for a film that will stay with you long after you’ve watched it, then look no further than Falcon Lake.
