Review
The sun blazed over the sandy shores of the French Riviera as Johnny Miller stumbled into a bar. He was a man on a mission – to forget his troubles, if only for a little while. It was in this hazy, booze-fueled state that he met the lovely and charismatic Julia Ross, who would ultimately change his life forever.
Such is the premise of “Holiday,” the 1938 film adaptation of the play by Philip Barry. Directed by George Cukor and starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, it’s a classic romantic comedy that has stood the test of time.
The plot revolves around Johnny, a disillusioned businessman who takes an impromptu trip to Europe to clear his head. While there, he meets Julia, an adventurous socialite who challenges him to let loose and enjoy life.
Despite their initial disagreements, Julia and Johnny soon fall in love. But with her wealthy family and his business obligations looming over them, they must decide whether to pursue their hearts’ desires or follow societal expectations.
Hepburn’s portrayal of Julia is nothing short of iconic. She exudes confidence and charm with every word and gesture, making it easy to see why Johnny falls for her so quickly. Grant’s performance as Johnny is equally impressive – he perfectly captures the character’s internal struggles while maintaining his signature wit and charisma.
But “Holiday” isn’t just a showcase for its lead actors – supporting players like Lew Ayres (who plays Julia’s brother) and Edward Everett Horton (who plays Johnny’s business partner) add depth and humor to an already delightful film.
One standout aspect of “Holiday” is its dialogue. Written by Donald Ogden Stewart (who won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay), the film features rapid-fire exchanges between characters that are both witty and insightful.
For example, when Johnny first meets Julia, she tells him, “I’ve been educated to be charming, not sincere.” Johnny responds, “I’m a man, and I’ve been educated to be stupid.” It’s a clever bit of banter that sets the tone for their relationship.
Another memorable line comes from Edward Everett Horton’s character, who warns Johnny about Julia’s family: “They’re like Charles Dickens. They never let you alone until they’re ready to kill you.”
The film’s score is also noteworthy – it features several famous songs by composer George Gershwin, including “Love Is Here to Stay” and “But Not for Me.”
Despite its many strengths, “Holiday” wasn’t initially a commercial success. It was released during the Great Depression, when audiences were looking for escapist entertainment rather than introspective comedies.
However, over time the film has become beloved by classic movie fans and critics alike. In his review for The New Yorker, film critic Pauline Kael wrote that “‘Holiday’ is one of the rare comedies that combines sophistication with warmth and grace.”
Indeed, there’s something timeless about the story of two people defying societal norms to pursue their happiness. As Hepburn’s Julia says in one pivotal scene: “Why should we destroy each other just because society says we shouldn’t?”
“Holiday” may have been made over 80 years ago, but its message of following your heart remains just as relevant today.
